STAFFELBACH and Corhagen were waiting for Cole outside in the hallway. “Security is sealing the place off,” Corhagen said as Cole approached. “It looks like we’re getting their cooperation after all. Until this is settled, the building is going to be evacuated.”

“The Shadewater coven is on their way right now,” Cole filled in. “The ritual will take time, but once they’ve performed it, this area will be cut off from that pocket space.”

“So, we’re done?”

Cole shook his head at Staffelbach. “I wish it were that easy. So far, they’ve only opened breaches in this building, but that could be because this place holds a vested interest for them. Plus, there could be other breaches we don’t know about, outside this area. We may have made this harder for them, but I doubt they’ll stay locked out indefinitely.”

“At the very least, we’ll be done here,” Corhagen pointed out.

Neither Cole nor Staffelbach could argue with that. Now that the havoc had died down, the crowd of spectators was being led out of the building. Cole kept his eyes sharp in case any more openings appeared, but it was quiet now. The potion he had spread around the building was apparently still in effect, healing any potential breaches before they could be fully formed.

It took longer than he would have liked, but the building’s occupants eventually poured out into the parking lot. Some were confused by what had happened. Those few that had witnessed the event still looked shell-shocked. Cole was informed that an ambulance was on the way to check everyone for injuries and treat those suffering from post-traumatic shock. While they waited for the coven to arrive, Cole overheard several of the younger children whisper excitedly among themselves. Apparently, the theory amongst them was that it had all been the work of aliens, a secret network of foreign spies, and a magical school for evil wizards.

He was chuckling to himself when Staffelbach noticed. “I’m just laughing at what the kids have to say about all this,” Cole explained. “They do have quite the imagination.”

One child began insisting his evil wizard school theory was valid due to a book brought to him by his grandmother from Germany. “The evil wizard school was shut down several years ago,” Cole called out on a whim, causing the young boy to stare openly in shock. “Sorry to disappoint you.”

“I would worry about you saying things like that to a little kid,” Corhagen admonished, “but something tells me I don’t want to know that there really was an evil school for wizards at one point.”

“In Germany,” Cole elaborated, earning him a glare from Corhagen. “It was shut down after what you call the second World War.”

“So, what?” Staffelbach asked, amused. “Hitler was really an evil wizard?”

“They wouldn’t let him in,” Cole explained. “His entrance form was rejected, if my understanding is correct.”

Cole barely noticed the look on Staffelbach’s face. Standing on the outskirts of the group of kids, who’d all begun whispering among themselves excitedly after Cole’s loud statement, was the same girl from before, whom Corhagen had pointed out.
